Potentially inappropriate medication prescribing among elderly patients with cardiovascular diseases

Background/Aim. The growing number of older adults means higher medicine utilization. aim the study was to determine frequency and identify risk factors potentially inappropriate medication (PIM) in elderly population with cardiovascular diseases. Methods. retrospective, cross-sectional performed 2018, relevant data were collected during period from January 2016 December 2017. sample included 1,500 patients over 65 years disease who had medical records at Institute for Gerontology Palliative Care, Belgrade. Assessment PIM done by standard international criteria such as American Geriatrics Society 2015 updated Beers Criteria use adults. Results. 70.3%. In relation gender, it more frequent female elders. mean prescribed drugs similar 2017, 7.2 7.3, respectively. most common were: medium-acting benzodiazepines (70.9%), central ? blockers (23.98%), antipsychotics (typical atypical) (20.94%). comorbidity noted a group labeled International Disease Classification I00-I99, which includes heart blood vessel diseases [n = 2,658 (36.9%)]. diagnoses belonged subgroups I10-I15 [hypertensive diseases, n 1,298 (18%)], I20-I25 [ischemic 542 (7.5%)], I30-I52 [other forms disease, 705 (9.8%)], I60-I69 [cerebrovascular 94 (1.3%)], I80- I89 [diseases veins, lymph vessels, nodes 12 (0.17%)]. polypharmacy, nicotine use, cognitive status, nutrition state, registered sample. Conclusion. Cardiovascular are associated high prevalence PIM. Creating health recommendations prescribing that would emphasize these could reduce this population.
